Apple finally brings call recording to iPhones with the upcoming iOS 18 update. The long-awaited feature will allow users to record phone calls directly from the Phone app.
On Monday, June 10, Apple software engineering lead Craig Federighi announced at WWDC 2024 that they are introducing an in-built call recorder to iPhones.
Call recording on iPhones comes with the upcoming iOS 18 version, which is currently in beta form and is set to release in September 2024.
The iOS 18 is compatible with the following devices,
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus

The call recording option will appear on the live call screen alongside the “End” and “Mute” buttons.
When you start recording, all participants will be notified. You still need to follow local laws and require permission from the other party/parties to record calls.
It’s unclear whether the notification works with other iPhone users only or if the participants across all phone types will be notified.
Call recordings on iPhones come with an added AI magic on the top. As you start recording, Apple Intelligence generates your call transcription in real-time. Moreover, when the call ends, it provides a summary, highlighting the key points discussed during the call.
Apple says the call transcription will be available in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, and Portuguese.
Many Android devices have been call recording for years. Some Android phones notify participants, but others silently record calls, raising privacy concerns. Although Android has supported call recording for a while, Apple’s focus on privacy and ease of use sets a new standard.
